CCT: Monday & Wednesday, January 15-17, 2007

January 17th, 2007

“A worldview is more than a private and personal viewpoint; it is a comprehensive life system that seeks to answer the basic questions of life. A Christians worldview is not just one personals faith expression. It is an all-consuming way of life and is applicable to all spheres of life.”
- David Dockery and Gregory Thornbury

  • Characteristics of a Worldview
    1. It has a holistic goal
      • Seeks to integrate every area of life into a cohesive whole
    2. It is a perspectival approach
      • What we approach the task out of who and what we are; we bring ourselves (therefore, a necessary subjectivity)
    3. It is an exploratory process
      • Takes place over time, over a lifetime
      • It probes relationships
    4. It is pluralistic
      • There are multiple places from which we all begin our worldview building
      • There are various methods we follow
      • Therefore there are pluralistic conclusions drawn
      • Starting places and methodology mean everything
    5. It has action outcomes
      • what we think and value necessarily emerges into what we do, how we live, unless and until we change our worldview.
      • Howe we interpret reality shapes our lifestyle.
      • Moral dimension - do you claim to follow Jesus’ world view? how would one know?
  • What do world views do for us?
    • need to unify our thought life
      • the world is full of thinks to think about
      • not all ideas are acceptable world views like sorting and piecing
      • for christ integrates life to faith and faith to life
      • mental image - quilt
    • need to provide meaning
      • humans are meaning-seekers
      • need to gain direction for our actions
      • endless choice sof things to do options to weigh experiences to decide about
      • wv are guiding mechanisims
      • for christ orur giuiding mechanisim is the bible
      • mental picture - map and directions
    • need to establish a foundation for our exploration
      • life is an adventure, a pilgramage
      • we never know very far in advance, but we plan to move forward and explore
      • wv provide sense centering for assessing save/unsafe
