I’m awesome, I know about every language, and I have between 6 and 500 doctorate degrees
- Dr. Plaster

Preface to the notes: I have a hard time listening to Dr. Plaster because he reminds me of Chris Farley.

  • Why do we do theology?
    • The nature of the bible
      • you are always asking questions, you cannot live a Christian life and not ask questions
    • The questions raised by our culture
      • our culture bombards us with questions and challenges
    • The need for meaning and significance
      • How do i belong? where do i fit?
    • Guidance for our decisions and choices
      • get answers for our choices
    • Fulfill the Great commission
  • What is theology?
    • That discipline which strives:
      • to give a coherent statement of the doctrines of the Christian faith
      • based primarily upon the Scriptures
      • placed in the context of culture in general
      • worded in a contemporary indium, and
      • related to the issues of life
  • Theology is
    • Systematic
      • we organize the material
    • Biblical
      • based primarily on the scripture
    • Related
      • General issues of culture and learning
    • Contemporary
      • understandable
    • Practical
      • Deals with issues of life
  • Exegetical Theology
    • Theology concerned with the language of the original text of the scripture. there is a focus on biblical backgrounds and the use of the original languages to properly interpret the text.
  • Historical Theology
    • What others in the past have concluded from their study of the bible.
    • Two perspectives
      • Synchronic Approach vs. Diachronic Approach
        • Church fathers > Augustine > reformation > 18th century > modern
        • Synchronic: how is it developed through time
        • Diachronic: how it is developed through people
  • Biblical Theology
    • A study of the theological content of a specific portion of the bible such as the old or new testament or the writings of a particular author such as Moses, Paul, or John
    • Built on the concept of progress of information
      • Lets take a look at pieces and how it’s put together
  • Apologetics
    • Providing a defense of the truthfulness of the Christian faith in the face of unbelief
  • Systematic Theology
    • Concerned with the organizing of material together into conclusions or theological constructs
  • Practical Theology
    • the application of theology to life and ministry
      • good methods are built on a consistent philosophy of ministry that flows from your systematic theology
    • Flow of Practical Theology
    • Your Theology > Your Philosophy of Ministry > Your Methods
