Laws, and the ridiculousness thereof.

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

The following is a verbatim message off the voice recording when calling the Town of Winona Lake.

Thank you for calling the town of Winona Lake. The town offices would like to remind residents that on days with two or more inches of snow, there is no parking on the even number side of the street on even days, and no parking on the odd number side of the street on odd days, such as Tuesday, February 13th.

Currently, everyone on Court Street is parked on the odd side of the street (in front of my house, 1009 Court Street.) My thoughts were that if I were to park on the even side of the street (the opposite side from where everyone is parked now,) I would inherently block traffic, as our street is only two cars wide. So, I waited until after the recording, pressed 103, and spoke to the very kind, half-machine, old lady on the other end of the tele.

Andy: Hi, I am calling for clairification on the parking law.
Lady: On days with two or more inches of snow, such as today, there is no parking on odd numbered sides of the street on odd days, such as today.
Andy: The street I live on is only two cars wide. Right now, everyone is parked on the odd side of the street, so if I park on the even side, I will block traffic.
Lady: If everyone moves to the even side of the street, you won’t block traffic.
Andy: But right now, everyone is parked on the odd side of the street. If I park on the other side, I will block my street, do you understand?
Lady: Yes. What street do you live on?
Andy: Court Street, on the island.
Lady: Oh, everyone is probably parked on the odd side of the street.
Andy: Yes.
Lady: Well, right now they are clearing the main roads. Let me find out what you should do and call you back. What’s your phone number?
Andy: 937
Lady: 574?
Andy: No, 937.
Lady: Do you have a local telephone?
Andy: No, I’m from Dayton, Ohio.
Lady: Oh, okay. What’s your phone number?
Andy: 937 / 409 5421.
Lady: Okay, we’ll call you once we get it figured out. You live on Court Street, right?
Andy: Yes. I look forward to hearing from you.
Lady: Bye.

For now, I am sitting in the warmth of my office, about to do some work for Hand. It will be interesting tonight, when I get to my road, and people are parked on the odd side of the street. Cheers to you, Winona Lake, cheers, cheers to you.

Update: About 2 minutes after posting this, the good folks at the City of Winona called me back. The same lady informed me that it’s between me and my neighbors to move our cars over, so my understanding is that it has become my responsibility to rally the people on my street to move their cars to the other side. Bah!
