  • Question: What comes to your mind when you hear the word happiness?
  • 80% say “the most important thing that my parents want for me, is to be happy”
  • People today do not know what happiness means, and because they’ve misdefined it, they are going about getting it the wrong way, and their lives are being ruined.
  • Western Culture (see, proverbs)
    • “we have the right to happiness” - now means something it hasn’t meant before
    • happiness is a sense of pleasurable satisfaction.
    • We use ‘happy’ to refer to a certain feeling we have, a sense of satisfaction inside
    • New ‘happiness’ is vastly overrated
  • How are people doing in regards to obtaining ‘new happiness’?
    • Rate of depression increased 10 times in one generation
    • People have lost the hunger to live for something bigger than they are
    • #1 preoccupation is wether they feel happy
  • Men losing interest in their wives
    • 3 hours of tv = 300 gorgeous women
    • Yesteryear - no cars, tv, internet, less beautiful women
    • Guys reason: “I can do better”
    • Focus on yourself, “how will it make me feel happy”
  • New Testament - classic happiness
    • Happiness is defined as eternal life
    • The essence of eternal life is a new quality of life
    • A person learns to live like Jesus Christ
  • What does it mean to take up your cross?
    • You’re no longer concerned about your own desires
    • To deny yourself, you don’t make your desires the absolute
    • Seek to live for JC
    • Practiced daily
  • Are you happy in the classic sense?
    • Deny yourself, focus on others
    • Learn how to be a good friend
    • You’ve got a dot called your life, if you focus on becoming a certain kind of person, you’ll grow in virtue and livelyhood
  • Paradox of Hedonism
    • If you want to feel happiness, don’t seek it
    • If you want to feel satisfaction, forget what satisfaction feels like
    • If you gain your life, you lose it. IF you lose your life for Christ, you’ll gain it.
  • Atheism and Monopoly
    • If the whole game doesn’t have a purpose, the moves within the game are meaningless.
    • If there is no God, what does it matter what you choose to do.
  • Why are people so unhappy?
    • Happiness is a feeling of satisfaction.
    • In order to gain happiness, I have to focus on me.
    • The path to happiness is not self-absorption, it is the path of self denial.
